Methods for Traveling in Switzerland
Backpacking
There are several ways to see Switzerland for people on various budgets. One of the more traditional ways to visit the country is through the practice of backpacking. This is the most economically efficient way to visit the Swiss countryside, and allows you to see the country from multiple perspectives. When backpacking in Switzerland, make sure that you have an adequate map and a listing of hostels and inns in the areas you wish to visit. There are actually two types of accommodations for backpackers in Switzerland, the "Backpacker" and the "Youth Hostel."
The Youth Hostels are numerous and spread out through the country since they are government subsidized. This means that just about anywhere you are looking to visit there should be a Youth Hostel nearby. In contrast, the Backpackers are local owned, but are definitely growing in numbers as the years progress. Do your research before you enter the country to ensure that you are not left stranded without a bed to sleep in. The Youth Hostels have curfew times, but also there is an excellent Europe-wide pass you can purchase if you are planning on visiting multiple hostels during your travel in Europe. I would recommend picking up this pass as it is good for several months, and ensures you will have a place to stay wherever you go on the continent.
Bed and Breakfasts
This type of accommodation is my favorite way to visit Switzerland. These are usually inns converted from Swiss homes, and provide not only accommodation, but also an excellent way to experience the culture of the country first-hand. Because these are peoples homes, it is important to respect the owner's and try to arrive during daylight hours. This type of hotel is wonderful because they can be found anywhere, from the largest city to the smallest mountain pass.
Tours
Another popular way to see the country is through a tour agency. This is an excellent idea for those who want to see the country from the comfort of a tour bus. The agency will take care of most things for you: accommodation, transportation, meals, etc. All you have to do is point your camera at the beautiful sites and experience the beauty that is Switzerland.
By Car
If you are a little more adventurous and want to travel on your own without a tour, consider driving. The roads are well marked and maintained throughout the cities and towns, and will allow you to see the country quite easily. If you do travel by car, make sure that you carry enough currency for the tolls, since each highway is subject to toll fees. The speed limit in Switzerland 120 km/h or 74 mph on the autobahn, and 80 km/h or 5 mph in the cities and towns. If the Swiss police stop you for speeding, expect them to ask to collect the fine right on the spot.
